The Do’s and Don’ts of Self-Storage

Self-storage is an excellent long or short-term solution to keeping your valuables safe. However, it takes extra time and intentionality to ensure your items stay in pristine condition. Here are a few do’s and don’ts when using a self-storage unit.

Do’s

When using a self-storage unit, be sure to:

  • Find the best self-storage unit: Not all self-storage units are equal! For instance, a storage unit made from wood or that lacks climate control will not protect your items. Read reviews and see what other customers have experienced.
  • Label all boxes: Labeling your boxes saves you time in the long run. You’ll be able to locate the exact item you need quicker–or if someone else needs to find something for you, they won’t have to rummage through every box. Go beyond basic labeling and write an inventory of everything in the box. For example, instead of “kitchen,” write “Kitchen–blender, cooking utensils, pot holders.”
  • Pack intentionally: Throwing miscellaneous items in a box may seem like a quick solution, but grouping similar items will save you time later. Pack your unit with unnecessary items towards the back and items you’ll want easy access to at the front. If possible, pack your boxes around the unit’s perimeter so you can access all your belongings without going through layers of boxes.

Don’ts

Here are some self-storage pitfalls to avoid:

  • Leave items unprotected: Even the best self-storage unit requires proper packing to keep your items in pristine condition. Cover furniture with blankets, wrap breakable items in packing paper or bubble wrap, and box small items to keep them from getting lost.
  • Share your keycode: Sharing your keycode gives someone else access to your items. Only share your keycode with someone you trust, and only if necessary. Just like you wouldn’t share the key code to your garage or home security system with all your friends, keeping your keycode private is the best policy.
