Should I Hire Movers for a Short-Distance Move?
Most people try to accomplish short-distance moves by themselves. It seems simple enough to hire a rental truck, feed a few friends pizza as payment for their help, and put your own sweat into transporting your possessions across town. How hard can it be? Do you really need to hire a moving company for a short-distance move?
While there have been plenty of successful short-distance moves, you should evaluate all the factors in your upcoming move.
Time
Packing and moving take far more time than most people realize. While the time involved in packing and moving varies drastically based upon how many items you own and how many people are helping, in general, it can take 50 hours to pack up a 4-bedroom home. This means that if you can only pack for 2-3 hours a day, it will take you up to 25 days to pack up your home.
On the other hand, hiring professional movers saves you valuable time. They can do all the packing for you, which means you don’t have to pack every day for weeks on end to be ready for your move. Since there are dozens of other tasks you must accomplish during moving, having professional movers pack and relocate your possessions is a huge stress reliever.
Physical Ability
Moving is very strenuous work. Lifting and carrying heavy objects across a house (and up or down stairs!) is not a task most Americans do on a daily basis. Add to this that most DIY movers don’t invest in proper equipment that enables professional movers to have good body mechanics. Dollies, carts, and lifting straps are invaluable to professional movers, but DIY movers don’t want to pay the rental fee and therefore forego these items. This mistake can be another reason for serious injury.
If you have any type of injury–old or new–it’s best to not attempt a DIY move. Repeated lifting can exacerbate old injuries or inflame new ones.
However, hiring a professional mover saves you the worry of potential injury to yourself or loved ones. Professional movers have been trained
on proper body mechanics so they don’t injure themselves. They have the right equipment and experience that lets them move heavy objects safely, without injuring themselves, the items, or damaging the house walls or doorframes!
