Should I DIY My Move?

Many Americans assume that the best way to relocate their home or office space is to do it themselves. On first glance, doing all the work to move your possessions seems to be the cheapest, most efficient option. You don’t have to find moving company quotes, pay for the labor or materials, or risk your possessions being lost or broken.

However, there are many factors in deciding the best method for your relocation. Here are a few to consider before deciding to move everything yourself.

Quantity of Items

It’s a completely different task to move a single-room apartment than a four-bedroom house. The more items you need to move, the more time and resources it takes. At a certain point, your time and sanity become more valuable than saving some cash on your move!

A DIY move makes sense for an apartment or a small house because you can usually fit your possessions in one rental truck. But once you start needing multiple trucks, it’s time to call in a professional mover.

Labor and Assistance

A successful DIY move is more attainable if you have lots of friends or family to help you pack, load, and unload your belongings. But if you are moving by yourself or only have a few people to help you, a DIY move can be an exhausting experience.

Additionally, you should ensure your friends or family are well-suited to help you move. Moving is a repetitive and heavy business that can easily cause injury. Back, neck, shoulder, knee, and other joint strains are common occurrences. You wouldn’t want your loved one to have pain or pay for rehabilitation because of your move. Hiring movers eliminates the risk of injury by allowing trained professionals to move your possessions.

Long Distance Move

The distance between point A and point B makes a huge difference in whether you should DIY your move. If you’re relocating within the same city, it’s not as challenging to move by yourself. However, if you’re driving many hours or moving out of state, it’s best to hire a professional mover.

Combination of Factors

On their own, none of these factors eliminates doing a DIY move. But if you have more than one red flag for a DIY move, you should hire a professional moving company. For instance, if you’re moving from a four-bedroom home but have plenty of able-bodied helpers, and moving in town, a DIY move is understandable. But if you’re moving from a condo without any help to a new location out-of-state, you should consider a professional mover.
