Precautions for Moving in the Winter

Winter is fast approaching, and with it comes more treacherous weather conditions that make moving an extra challenge.

Summertime tends to be ideal for relocation because the weather is more likely to be favorable. In the summer, there’s just heat and potentially rain to contend with. But in the winter, there are far more factors: frigid temperatures, snowy or icy walkways, chilling winds, and treacherous driving conditions.

However, plenty of people move during the winter. It is still possible to move safely during the wintertime with a few extra precautions.

Safe Weather Conditions

Winter weather can be unpredictable, but once you know the forecast for your planned moving date, you should make a final call about whether it is safe to move. If there is ice, snow, or frigid temperatures, you should consider rescheduling. Although rescheduling is understandably an inconvenience, it is better to be safe than sorry. You don’t want to risk injury to yourself or other because of the weather conditions.

Even if the weather is favorable enough to move, you should check all walkways, driveways, steps, and patios to ensure they are safe. You might need to shovel snow or spread salt. If you need to spread salt to melt ice or snow, it’s best to sweep away the salt before the movers arrive, as these can be a tripping hazard. Remember, movers may not be able to check their footing, especially when carrying large or heavy objects that obscure their vision. All pathways should be as clear as possible.

Stay Warm

Lifting boxes and furniture, brisk walking, and going up and down stairs gets your heart pumping and raises your body temperature. But you should still prepare for cold weather by dressing warmly. Wear layered clothing so you can gradually remove layers as you warm up.

Even if your body temperature is warm, areas like your ears, fingers, and toes will likely remain vulnerable and sensitive to cold. Wear gloves, a hat or ear warmers, and winter boots with thick (or layered) socks.

Designate one room of the house to warm up. Provide a space heater and hot beverages so movers can warm up stiff fingers or get something warm to drink.

Protect Your Floors

Big boots drag in extra mud, salt, and dirty melting snow. These can be very damaging to your hardwood floors or carpet and add just one more cleaning item to your to-do list. Protect your floors by placing mats, tarps, or leftover cardboard boxes on main walkways.

Protect Your Belongings

If possible, wrap your furniture in blankets, plastic wrap, tarps, or other coverings to prevent them from contacting the dirt, snow, or ice.

Plan Extra Travel Time

Driving a moving truck is a daunting task for even the most competent driver. Adding snowy or icy driving conditions only makes this task trickier! Planning extra travel time will reduce your stress, which will allow you to take your time while driving. If you find the road conditions less than ideal, you can reduce your speed, stop at yellow lights, or take a longer but safer route to your destination.
