Moving can be a big ordeal. You may have many questions about your moving service. Here are some frequently asked questions about using a moving company.

What paperwork and information must the mover provide?

The moving company must provide the following documents before moving day:

  • A copy of its written non-binding or binding estimate
  • A copy of the U.S. Department Of Transportation (DOT) publication, “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move”
  • Neutral dispute settlement/arbitration program information
  • Contact information for the mover for inquiries and complaints

Additionally, the mover must:

  • At the time of moving, give you a copy of the order for service with signatures and dates from you and the mover.
  • Prior to loading your belongings, give you a copy of the bill of lading or freight bill.
  • Prior to unloading your belongings at the destination, give you a copy of the completed bill of lading or freight bill

What is an order for service?

This document authorizes the mover to ship your belongings.

What is a bill of lading?

A bill of lading is the official contract between you and the mover that should be given to you prior to the moving day.

Is there moving insurance?

Yes, there are three types of moving insurance: limited liability, added valuation, and full value. Discuss these with your moving company to find the best fit.
