Choosing movers to relocate your belongings is a very different experience than renting a U-Haul and paying friends with pizza to help you move. There are estimates, contracts, and extra paperwork to insure your belongings and agree upon payment for services.
As you research moving services, you may come across some terms about moving estimates. These are worth explaining so you can feel confident choosing your moving service.
Non-Binding Estimate
A non-binding estimate gives you a fairly accurate estimation of the moving cost but is not set in stone. This type of estimate is subject to change as services are added or voided.
A moving service will typically visit your residence or business to estimate the cost of moving your belongings. A non-binding estimate should be in writing, stating that it is a non-binding estimate and not the final document.
Binding Estimate
This estimate is the final written estimate. It is a binding contract signed by both parties that the cost of moving will not exceed the price agreed upon. If you add services, the payment is due on your moving day.
110% Rule
Sometimes the price of moving the goods exceeds the estimated cost, which means movers don’t profit as much from the move. The 110% rule states that movers cannot charge more than 110% of the estimated cost, and must deliver your belongings within 30 days.
