Know These Moving Company Red Flags
Moving can be an overwhelming task, and finding a moving company can add to the stress of a move. It can feel easier to take a friend’s recommendation or choose the top search engine results than to take the time to do extra research and find a company that suits your specific needs.
Thankfully, taking the time to look up moving companies doesn’t require special skills or extensive research. What’s most important is that you avoid companies that are scams or have poor reviews or ratings. Here are some top red flags in a moving company.
Bad Customer Reviews
It’s crucial to read first-hand customer experiences. A company may put 5-star reviews on its website, but there’s no guarantee these reviews are authentic. Instead, search for the moving company and “reviews.” You can look at reviews from unbiased organizations like:
- Yelp
- Moving.com
- Google Maps Reviews, best viewed on the Google Maps app
Filed Complaints with BBB and FMCSA
While a few bad reviews are bound to happen even with the best companies, customers who feel strongly about their poor experience will go further than a Yelp or Google review and file an official complaint with the Better Business Bureau or FMCSA. If a moving company has a history of complaints, this is a huge red flag.
No References
Hiring a moving company is similar to a manager hiring an employee. Moving companies are your prospective employees. And like most job applications, prospective employees must include references to be seriously considered.
A quality moving company should provide you with a plethora of references. If they can’t, this is also a red flag. Just like you wouldn’t hire an employee with zero references, neither should you hire a moving company without them.
