Is the Moving Company Properly Licensed?
There are plenty of side or unlicensed companies out there, but these should be avoided at all costs. Legal action is much more complicated and expensive if these moving companies damage your possessions.
How do you know if a company is licensed? You can ask them, but it’s best to verify their legitimacy for yourself. Professional interstate moving companies–those who relocate out of state–must have a US Department of Transportation (USDOT) number, which you can check here.
Moving companies who only relocate instate don’t need a government license, so they usually hold state licenses. Check your state license records to ensure the moving company has a state license.

Most movers will provide you with Basic Limited Liability Protection once you sign the Bill of Lading. But this insurance will hardly cover the true value of your possessions should anything happen to them.
Instead, ask about Full Value Protection insurance, which states the mover must reimburse the replacement value of whatever’s been damaged or lost.
