All You Need to Know About Storing Your RV Trailer in Self-Storage
Clean Your RV Trailer Thoroughly
Remove any food, trash, linens, or anything else that could attract pests. It’s best if your trailer is completely empty, even if you keep items like linens in the storage unit. This will ensure that your trailer stays free from unwanted pests.
Next, thoroughly clean the interior and exterior to ensure there are no sticky stains that would attract pests, mold, or mildew.
Winterize Your Trailer
Prepare your trailer for long-term cold weather exposure by consulting the following checklist:
- Drain the water system so pipes and water tanks don’t burst or leak.
- Add antifreeze and fuel stabilizer if needed.
- Disconnect the battery so it is ready to be used in the spring.
- Leave cabinets and drawers open to prevent moisture build-up that can result in mold or mildew.
- Turn off all appliances and the water pump.
- Cover all the vents and exhaust pipes to keep out rodents and bugs.
- Change the engine oil to prevent sludge from building up in the engine
- Inspect the RV for any leaks or cracks. If you find any, fix them before storing the trailer!
Protect the Trailer’s Tires
You don’t want to change a flat tire in a tight storage unit! Use tire chocks to prevent flat spots in your tires. You can further protect the tires from fluctuating temperatures by placing tire covers over them.
Secure and Cover the RV Trailer
Once everything has been checked, cleaned, and prepared for storage, securely lock all the windows, blinds, doors, and storage bays. Retract any awnings or slide-outs. Finally, cover the RV trailer with a quality cover to prevent any further damage, dust, or scratches. 
Check Periodically on Your RV Trailer
Consider checking on your RV trailer periodically through the winter, especially if your area has experienced extreme weather. Although you may have done all you could to protect it, you may need to attend to repairs before you can use your trailer in the spring.
