All You Need to Know About Storing Bedroom Furniture in Self-Storage

Unused bedroom furniture and accompanying items are bulky, heavy, and cumbersome to keep in your house. You don’t want to discard these, especially if they are heirlooms or quality furniture, but where should you put them?

Bedroom furniture, mattresses, linens, carpets, and rugs are commonly stored in self-storage units. Self-storage is an excellent solution to storing these valuable items for later use while keeping your house decluttered and accessible.

Before storing your bedroom furniture and accessories, consider these preparations for proper storage so these items are in optimal condition when you want to use them.

How Should I Store Bedroom Furniture in Self Storage?

To keep your bedroom furniture in excellent condition, first consider which storage unit best fits your needs. Climate-controlled storage units keep the unit’s temperature between 55 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit.  This prevents wooden furniture from swelling and compressing due to temperature and humidity fluctuations and extends your furniture’s longevity.

Once you’ve decided on your storage unit, disassemble and clean your furniture. Take apart bed frames, remove shelves from bookcases, or remove the legs from tables. This makes moving easier and also saves space in your storage unit.

Next, wrap your furniture in breathable materials for protection. Old sheets, blankets, and dropcloths are preferred over plastic because plastic can trap moisture and damage the wood or fabric. You can also use corner protectors to prevent further damage (or injury!).

Once you have your furniture in the unit, elevate the furniture on a raised surface to prevent moisture damage. Wooden pallets are best, but other sturdy substitutes can work as well.

You can organize the furniture in your unit by putting the heaviest furniture in the back of the unit, creating aisles for easy access, and avoiding stacking the furniture to avoid potential damage.

How Should I Store Comforters and Blankets in Self Storage?

Bed linens, comforters, and blankets shouldn’t be stacked in a storage unit, as they can get moldy, musty, or destroyed by pests, rendering them unusable. Instead, ensure the linens are washed and completely dry before storing to prevent the accumulation of mold. Fold them carefully and store them in plastic bins or canvas bags, as these best prevent rodents and bugs. Cardboard boxes don’t protect against bugs and rodents and even absorb moisture that leads to mold.

Vacuum-sealed bags are another alternative to plastic bins or canvas bags, as these save space, prevent moisture build-up, and are pest-free. Another way to prevent pests is to add mothballs or cedar blocks to your bins.

How Should I Store a Mattress in Self Storage?

Just like bed linens, you shouldn’t store a mattress in a self-storage unit without proper preparation and protection. If you’re planning on storing a mattress, ensure you get a storage unit large enough for the mattress to lay flat and with nothing on top of it. This may require you to get a larger storage than you first thought, but it’s worth it to keep your mattress in top condition.

You’ll first want to clean the mattress by vacuuming it with a hose attachment to remove any dust and debris. Stain treat any stains or spills, then allow the mattress to air out completely so it is dry and odorless.

Once dry, use a mattress bag to protect the mattress during transportation and from dirt, dust, and pests.

In the storage unit, place the mattress flat on the floor instead of on its side or upright. This prevents the coils from shifting, which keeps the mattress level and even. You should also not store anything heavy on top of the mattress. The constant weight will damage the mattress by creating compressed and uneven areas where the heavy objects once lay. Finally, consider placing the mattress on a wooden pallet, as moisture can get trapped under the mattress.

How Should I Store Rugs or Carpet in Self Storage?

Rugs and carpets should be cleaned thoroughly and allowed to dry completely. This includes stain treatments and the application of pest repellent, if necessary.

Prevent damage by rolling–not folding— the rugs and carpets. When rolling, ensure the pile (fibers) faces inward and the backing is on the outside of the roll. You want to roll the carpet or rug tightly and evenly, so placing a rod or dowel at the beginning of your roll can provide extra support. Once rolled, wrap the rug or carpet tightly with a breathable material like fabric or heavy-duty paper. Tape all the edges securely so no pests can enter.

Store the carpet or rug vertically in the storage unit to best maintain its shape. Storing it on the floor would create a flattened spot that, once unrolled, can be hard to iron out.
