5 Tips for Storing Lawn Equipment for the Season

With temperatures dropping, the lawnmowing season is coming to a close. You won’t need your lawnmower for the next 6 months, yet most lawnmowers sit in the garage or shed, waiting to be used.

Lawnmowers–even push mowers–take up a lot of space in your garage or shed. In the winter, you want easy access in your garage to winter gear like snow shovels, sleds, snow blowers, salt, and other winter equipment. It’s much better to swap out your lawnmower for winter equipment.

Where Can I Store My Lawnmower in the Winter?

One of the easiest ways to gain storage space in the winter is to transport your lawnmower, weedeater, and other lawn equipment to one of Peavler’s storage units! This keeps them in a safe, climate-controlled space where they will be ready to use in the spring.

Peavler Moving & Storage has a variety of storage unit sizes, so you can pick the right size for your items. Once you have a storage unit for your lawnmower, you’ll likely realize dozens of other large, bulky, or seasonal items that you can store in the unit to free up space in your home, garage, or basement.

Can You Store Lawn Equipment With a Full Gas Tank?

Although it sounds like a good idea to leave your lawn equipment prepped and ready to go for the spring, you should never store lawn equipment with gas inside. Gasoline and diesel evaporate over time and become sludge. This is especially true for leaving it untouched for six months in a storage unit! Starting the equipment with sludgy gasoline can damage the engine permanently. Be sure to empty the tank completely before storage.

You can empty the tank by:

  • Running the motor until it runs out of gas: If the tank is nearly empty, continue to run the mower until it runs out.
  • Siphon out the gas: If there’s a lot of gas left in the tank, use a siphon to empty the gas tank.

Emptying the tank will prevent spillage during transportation or in your storage unit.

Are There Certain Lawn Equipment That Aren’t Allowed in Self-Storage?

Some types of lawn equipment may not be permitted to be stored in self-storage, such as propane-powered equipment or equipment with hazardous materials. Contact Peavler Moving & Storage to see if your lawn equipment can be stored at our facility.
